Professor Alan Yeakley is part of the team of 23 students, and Professor Yeakley is a guy who’s been working in environmental science and ecology since the late 80s. He says that river deltas have a lot of wicked problems…
And they do: They have to deal with flooding, water-borne disease, water shortages and pollution, among other things.
River deltas are extremely sensitive parts of our world, and they need to be taken care of. They’re also places that humans naturally want to live near, since resources are plentiful.
This international team is hoping to engineer solutions to these problems around the world by combining sciences like engineering, planning, medical science, ecology, sociology, behavioral science, economics, political science, law, business, and water management.
We at GetReal believe that the real heroes are the engineers.
That’s because engineers are the problem solvers. Every other science in that list is about observation and studying. Engineering is about taking that information and doing something with it.
So while the engineers on the team may rely on the expertise of the other team members to create an informed solution, guess who’s actually making the solution.
This just goes to show you how important and diverse engineers are.
